US based manufacturer Hoover had this fantastic industrial building designed as a statement building by premier British firm Wallis, Gilbert & Partners (Thomas Wallis apparently had no partners, just used this name to provide more grandeur to the company). At the time the area was full of beautiful Art Deco and Modernist gems. Many have fallen due to the war and economic changes. The loss of Wallis’s Firestone factory (now Sky TV’s offices and demolished 2 weeks before it was due to be listed) was nothing short of vandalism. Thankfully the Hoover Building remains and amazingly has been preserved by Tesco, who worked with English Heritage, altering the use of the building in the early 1990s.
